China´s Misty Rivers
When the world watched the Olympics in Beijing, life went on placidly along two of China's misty rivers which I visited as part of a tour. These images show the famous dragon's-tooth mountains along the Li River and the majestic Three Gorges Dam area of the mighty Yangtze River.

Price: $40

(1) Birds on the Li River

On the top deck of a tour boat I was surprised to see a flock of birds approaching. As I shot several pictures, I realized that they were a local variety of egrets.

(2) March into mist

Mountains along the Three Gorges shoreline seemed to be marching into the distant mist, as compressed by a telephoto view.

(3) Crowded river

Tour boats crowd the Li River, and no wonder, considering the natural beauty of the area.

(4) Floating mysteriously

Floating mysteriously, vaporous clouds shroud the mountainous shores of the Yangtze River.

(5) Clouds hover

Clouds hover above a rocky shoreline as a boat stands by on the Yangtze River's Three Gorges area.

(6) String attached

"It's a bird," no, actually there's a string attached, literally. It's a lifelike handmade kite, flying above a tour boat on the Yangtze River.

(7) Reflection

Dragon's-teeth mountains are reflected in a bend in the Li River.

(8) Old ways

Li River residents still use old ways to get along, poling in the shallows while water buffalo, still used in farming, graze on the shore.

(9) Aglow

Magnificent mountains dominate the view as the sky is aglow behind them on the Yangtze River.

(10) Wallowing

Wallowing in the Li River, water buffalo share space with ducks.

(11) Sheer beauty

In the Three Gorges area of the Yangtze River, "sheer beauty" takes on new meaning because the rocks are both sheer and beautiful.

(12) Bicycle on the Li

When I saw a bicycle rider at the edge of the Li River I wondered how he got there through such rough surrounding terrain. And where he was going.

(13) Three Gorges

Clouds, mist and even sunshine mark the Three Gorges area of the Yangtze River.

(14) Umbrellas

Umbrellas decorate the shoreline on the Li River. The people weren't just enjoying a day at the beach; they were vendors of some kind -- although I never confirmed that.
