Blackwater Blues... and Fast Friends

These photos show the beauty and majesty of Great Blue Herons as photographed in Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge in Maryland and in the James River in Virginia. I like the sense of natural energy they can add to a doctor's office or dreary passageway, any place where serene images would create a welcoming atmosphere.
Single individual prints, suitable for framing, are $20 for 8 x 10 inch size, but enlargements, even up to poster size, are available at special rates.

Price: $40

(1) Heron Angle

Its image dusted in the foreground by marsh grasses, a heron searches for prey.

(2) Blues 1

Great Blue Herons are plentiful at Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge. But no matter how many times I see them, my first reaction is always, "Wow!" The golden light added to the impact.

(3) Blues 2

Herons and egrets often share the same general territory as shown on this peninsula.

(4) Don't Fence Me In

The fences are for marsh control, not to keep out herons.

(5) Green scene

Reflections in a canal color the background as a heron looks on.

(6) Goose Stepping

In a seeming imitation of a striding soldier, a heron marches through the shallows.

(7) Flying

They're large, impressive creatures and when they take off they're even more impressive.

Huge powerful wings. . .

Flashing colors. . .

(8) Flying feathers

Strong winds that blow feathers forward fail to deter the intensity of a heron hunting in the James River, Richmond, Va.

(9) Rocky outlook

Amid rushing waters, a heron's perch is a patch of rocks from which he keeps a lookout for food in the James River, Richmond, Va.

(10) Feeding time

High above the James River in Richmond, Va., treetops are filled with nesting herons. Here a young one looks for attention from Mom.

(11) In a rush

Rushing waters run behind and along a heron in the James River, Richmond, Va.

(12) Fast waters

Fast friends of herons in the calm waters of Blackwater Refuge are the herons which thrive in the swift waters of the James River in Richmond, Va.

(13) Up and away

With a flurry, a heron takes off for new hunting grounds.

(14) Water_water

There's a lot of water ahead as a heron strides with determination.

(15) Balancing act

In the winter, why get two feet cold when you can balance on one, as this heron demonstrates.

(16) Me and my shadow

Bright sun creates a sharp shadow of a heron strolling along the shoreline.

(17) Cold flight

That's ice in the background as a heron flies to an open place to hunt.

(18) In the Rough

Herons find fish and swallow them whole, a successful formula unless their eyes are "bigger than their stomach" -- or gullet, in which case they have been known to choke to death. In this case, the bird was fine.

(19) Heron Closeup

If a heron lets you get this close, you expect to pay a modeling fee.

(20) Shimmering image

Rustling waters show a shimmering image of a heron in autumn.

(21) Heron Closeup 2

Back at the edge of a stand of grasses, a heron stayed so comfortable with my presence that it became a good subject for a closeup -- assisted by a telephoto lens, of course.

(22) Wide wings

When a heron spreads its wings, they more than fill the frame of a telephoto shot.

(23) On the railing

Perching on the railing of a pond structure, a heron strikes a pose.

(24) Flaps down

Flaps are down for this heron getting some sun.

(25) Heron on ice

Even on an icy pond, a heron looks for a meal.

(26) Framed by marsh

Marsh grasses at the edge of a canal frame the still image of a heron.

(27) Blue in blue

A heron paints it image on a vivid, watery blue canvas.
